Project Week Day 2 : Q&A With My Middle School Students

Every year my school gives students a week to do a project on whatever they want.  Literally anything.  They take a week off of classes the week before spring break (which is this week) and have at it.  See a short video I made about last years Project Week HERE.

This year, I’m doing my own Project Week that’s all related to filmmaking. Check out my reflection on Day 1 to see a 2-second video animation intro I made.  Yesterday, I continued work on my bigger video project that is all about my story as a filmmaker.  I wrote out the script Monday and had my wife Sara edit it yesterday (she’s better at that stuff).  There are still some question marks in my mind on how I will do certain parts of it but for now I’m just scouring my old videos and movies that I’ve made and finding the clips from each of them that I plan on using.  Not sure what type of music I will use yet; contemplative…fun…energetic…?  We’ll see.

As I came to a point where I wasn’t sure exactly what to do next in regards to that project, I decided to take a break and film a short video I’ve wanted to do for a few weeks.  I recently gave my advisory students an opportunity to ask me anything and I wanted to make a video where I answered their questions.  It took about 30 minutes to shoot as I was answering each question in a different spot on campus and about 30 minutes to edit.  It was the first video that I got to use my new ‘THOM GIBSON MEDIA’ intro!

Here’s the final product:

Also, I have happened upon a SXSW Edu badge!  I will be heading up there this morning and tomorrow afternoon.  Not sure what sessions I’ll go to yet but I plan on vlogging my time there, so that’ll be another project to complete this week 🙂 I’ve barely worked on anything school related this week which has been nice.  I’m saving all of that for the early mornings of spring break.
