Entry 27 – 6th Grade Fractions Project

Entry 27 – 6th Grade Fractions Project

Tried a new project this year to close out our fractions unit.  I talk about how I set it up, how it went, and feedback from students on what worked and didn't.  It involved finding fractions in recipes and converting them up to 3 1/2 times the amount of ingredients for a big family gathering as well as cutting them down to half the amount of ingredients for a smaller party for friends. Here's the rubric: https://goo.gl/T6BhXn

Entry 26 – Project Week 2017

A few weeks ago, we did Project Week.  I've written about this in the past and I made a video for this year's projects. Each year at Headwaters School, students get a chance to take a week off of regular classes to explore an interest of their choice. Here's what students explored in 2017. My Project Week 2017 – Creating ‘My Filmmaking History’ Short Film

My Project Week 2017 – Creating ‘My Filmmaking History’ Short Film

Haven't updated in a couple of weeks.  Had a half week two weeks ago with student-led conferences in the latter half, then last week was Project Week.  While Project Week is primarily for students, I like to take the week to create my own project as well.  This year I wanted to create something that was an amalgamation of a few different videos I've seen in the past year.  A lot of people do a draw-my-life on YouTube, one YouTuber did a film-my-life, and another YouTuber shared his filmmaking beginnings.  My short film ended up being mostly a 'filmmaking history'…

Entry 10 – Puppy Bots & Student Led Conferences

Entry 10 – Puppy Bots & Student Led Conferences

It was a fairly short week in terms of actual class time.  First part of the week was spend finishing up our project in robotics and winding down in our integer unit in Pre-Algebra.  There were no classes on Thursday or Friday due to student-led conferences. STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES I wrote in-depth last year how we structure our student-led conferences.  Check it out HERE.  We didn't do much different this year except provide teacher comments.  In the past, teachers would write comments for students at the end of the semester and the comments would be put on report cards.  This time,…

A ‘Chopped’ Themed Birthday Party

A ‘Chopped’ Themed Birthday Party

My wife's creative outlet is to plan themed parties for her fellow pediatric residents.  She's pretty good at it.  One of her friends really loves the show 'Chopped.'  It's an intense cooking competition show if you've never seen it.  We had a 'Chopped' themed party complete with ingredient baskets, 5 different kitchens, 5 teams, 4 judges, and a final elimination round.  Super fun to film and the food was surprisingly really good. This has nothing to do with school except for a having a good work-life balance by going out and doing fun things :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdbCvOpVvGs

The Final Episodes of Middle School Robotics

The Final Episodes of Middle School Robotics

I realized I hadn't shared my final two episodes of Middle School Robotics here on the blog.  I'm really happy with how the whole series came out.  It was fun thinking through new ways to film or edit each new episode, as well as provide a glimpse of the progress students were making.  I may or may not do another 'season' of it in the future.  I kind of want to push myself to film more of my math classes, which will force me to make better math lessons; having a teacher walk through problems at the board makes for…

Week 35 – My Teacher Self Evaluation & End of Year Review Idea

Week 35 – My Teacher Self Evaluation & End of Year Review Idea

I thought for this week's reflection I would share my teacher self-evaluation that's due next week.  Quick recap of how things were going in class though: END OF YEAR REVIEW IDEA To help my students study for the final, I didn't really want to create a review sheet so instead I gave them access to all of the quizzes, tests, and reassessments I've made this semester.  I made a folder for each unit and put all the assessments (with answer keys) in those folders and then shared those folders with students and parents on our class website.  Got some positive…
