Tried a new project this year to close out our fractions unit.  I talk about how I set it up, how it went, and feedback from students on what worked and didn't.  It involved finding fractions in recipes and converting them up to 3 1/2 times the amount of ingredients for a big family gathering as well as cutting them down to half the amount of ingredients for a smaller party for friends. Last week was our first week back. It was weird being back at school so close to New Years.  We had staff development work on Monday the 2nd but were done by mid-day and were able to work on whatever we needed to.  The wifey had to work for much of my first week off so I tried to get a lot of my second semester planning done then.  My semester stays the same with exception to a new group of kids in my robotics class. Week 22 – “But Solving 1-Step Equations Is So Much Easier Without Modeling It!”

Dan Meyer has a collection of blog posts called "If (insert math concept) is the asprin, how do we create the headache."  I felt I was shoving asprin down my Pre-Algebra students throats as they were saying 'I don't have a headache but I do now!' during our lesson on modeling one-step equations.  Additionally, in 6th grade math, I feel I've got a wider gap between students with a lot of background knowledge on the current concept and students with no background knowledge.  It's challenging.  But we had fun auctions in class this week!
